AbstractSouth Africa has a rich history of lightning research. This paper describes The Johannesburg Lightning Research Laboratory (JLRL) project which continues the tradition of South African lightning research. The paper compares Johannesburg, South Africa with other similar studies and describes the highspeed camera, direct current measurement installation at Sentech tower and electric field studies currently underway.
